History of the Bruche Estate

From the Middle Ages to the present day:
800 years of history.

Experience a place whose roots reach back to the 12th century. Documented as the ancestral seat of the "von Broke" family as early as 1180, the Bruche estate offers a glimpse into the spirit of centuries past.

Once dominated by two medieval castle complexes, the striking west tower of the western outer bailey – an imposing tower dating from the mid-15th century – still bears witness to the estate's fortified history. The tower was built primarily as a defensive tower in the mid-15th century (probably before 1460).

Corporate events

After a checkered history under different noble families such as the von Kerssenbrock, von Oer and von Arnim families, the estate acquired its current baroque and symmetrical appearance in the 18th century:

Friedrich Freiherr von Hammerstein-Gesmold had the old buildings demolished except for the keep and built the present manor house and the baroque outer bailey between 1733 and 1736.

History and Future

Between the 18th and 19th centuries, the estate changed hands several times.

The owners included the families von dem Bussche zu Ippenburg, von Münster zu Landegge, von Redecker and von Pestel.

Since 1922, this historic ensemble has been owned by the von Bar family, who are passionately and consistently carrying on the legacy into the future in the fifth generation.
